Eden Hazard Interview
What age did you start at a professional club?
I joined Lille when I was 14.
What positions did you play?
I was a winger or I played in the 'no.10' role.
Who played with you who went on to make it as a player?
At international level I played with Christian Benteke growing up.
Any important/famous coaches?
When I turned professional Claude Puel was my first manager. He’s at Nice now. He was very good.
What was your favourite music during your academy years?
Definitely French rap. Booba was my favourite.
Favourite clothes? Any clothes you are embarrassed about now?
I have always been the same - something comfortable!
Any dodgy haircuts?
No, no! Always simple.
How good were the facilities?
For the young players it’s one of the best clubs in France. The training ground is new.
Looking back, what's the best piece of advice you received?
I remember the first time I met Patrick Kluivert and shook his hand. I played with him at Lille. He said, 'Yeah, you’re young, you have good quality, but work. You have to work. Every day you have to work if you want to be one of the best.' I remember that very well.
Tell us about the moment when you were given your first professional contract?
I was very happy. My father and my mother were in the room when I signed. The director of the academy was there. I was close to him. I was 15 and I started training with the first team then. I played my first game at 16.
