Blues increase lead at the top
In a tightly fought game at Stamford Bridge, it was Chelsea who came out on top in a 1-0 win over Manchester United.
There were chances at both ends with each side struggling to break through defences. Frustrations started to surface in the second half with a total of five bookings, including a controversial high tackle on Didier Drogba by Jonny Evans.
The Blues had to wait until the 73rd minute for their chance at glory. Frank Lampard's free-kick was attacked by John Terry and Nicolas Anelka who both got a touch as a header dropped into the bottom corner.
The goal was awarded to Terry, but replays have shown that either player could have put their name on the score sheet.
Chelsea battled on against a determined Manchester United to win the game and we equalled our club record for straight home wins.
After the game, Ancelotti reflected on the importance of widening the gap at the top of the table: “It is important, because this means we started the season very well, but we know that the season is very long, so we have to stay focused for the next matches. Today we beat a very good team.”
Chelsea are now five points clear at the top of the table.
