Chelsea travel to Madrid

27/09/2017

In the same week that Diego Costa confirms his move to Atletico Madrid, to take place in January, Chelsea face the Spanish team in the UEFA Champions League.

The last time the two sides met each other was in the 2013/14 Champions League semi-final. Despite holding the opposition to a 0-0 draw in Madrid, Chelsea were knocked out of the competition by Atletico, who then lost to rivals Real Madrid in the final.

Atletico also won the tie when they faced Chelsea in the 2012 UEFA Super Cup, but the Blues had the best of their first meeting.

The Blues beat Atletico in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League in 2009, putting four goals past the Madrid side.

It's important to point out as well that the Blues haven't been beating in a competitive match on Spanish soil for the last twelve years (that's nine matches)!

But it's not just previous matches that give this fixture history, as Diego Costa isn't the only player familiar to Madrid fans.

Thibaut Courtois, for example, won the La Liga title during his time on loan at Atletico, while Alvaro Morata played for rivals Real Madrid. Pedro, Cesc Fabregas, Cesar Azpilicueta and Willy Caballero have also faced Atletico during their time playing in La Liga.

On the other side, Chelsea fans will recognise Fernando Torres and Filipe Luis.

Kick off is at 7.45pm tonight. Check out BridgeKids tomorrow for a full match report!
