Chelsea raise the UEFA Champions League Cup

Chelsea FC – European Champions 2012

Saturday 18 May 2012 – the day that Chelsea Football Club got their hands on the trophy of the greatest club competition in the world, and put the club's name down in European football history next to so many other great clubs.

Chelsea have done well in Europe over the years picking up the UEFA Cup Winers' Cup in 1971 and 1998, and then the Super Cup also in 1998. But up until this year, they had missed out on the biggest prize – the Champions League.

The closest the Blues got, was 2008 when they lost out to Manchester United on penalties after the games finished 1-1. So, it was even sweeter that Chelsea won the tournament this year on penalties.

The Chelsea squad must have felt their name was on the cup this year after they pulled off an incredible comeback against Napoli in the last 16 (having been 3-1 down from the first leg) and an even more impressive performance away to Barcelona to get a 2-2 draw despite being down to 10 men.

The final itself was against Bayern Munich, and the Germans had home advantage for the game, but again, despite going one goal down, Chelsea got a last-minute equaliser from Drogba. Cech then saved a penalty from Robben in extra time, and then in the penalty shoot out, the Blues held their nerve to win 4-3 for the greatest result in the club's history!
