Ladies beat Spurs in Continental Tyres Cup

07/12/2017

Chelsea Ladies beat Tottenham Hostpur 4-1 in their final Continental Tyres Cup group game to seal top spot.

Fran Kirby scored two goals, sandwiched between strikes from Hannah Blundell and Drew Spence.

It was a special night for Claire Rafferty, who was celebrating 10 years with Chelsea. The midfielder captained the side, and gave her teammates a great speech before the match.

The Blues were clearly encouraged by their captain's words, as they took the lead halfway through the first 45 minutes.

Hannah Blundell's strike was mishandled by the goalkeeper for the first goal, as the ball went over the line.

Fran Kirby got the second and third either side of half-time, and then Spence finished things off with a fourth into the bottom corner.

Rafferty talked to the official Chelsea website after the match.

‘This is my home. I've not really had any thoughts about what's going on in the future, but I'd like to carry on my time at Chelsea and hopefully carry on the journey.

‘I don't know how many years are left in my legs, but people are already putting me in the coffin – I'm only 28! I've had three ACL injuries, so I've probably not got as long as most players, but maybe a couple more years – we'll see.

‘But I don't want it to be all about me – I just want to go on and win all the trophies. Then at the end of it maybe we can have a little party.’

Chelsea have drawn Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the competition, a tie manager Emma Hayes knows she will need to prepare for.

‘It’s a tough draw for us but we’re delighted to be at home and playing in front of our wonderful supporters at Kingsmeadow,’ she said.

‘We won all four of our group matches, but that counts for nothing if we don’t get the job done against Liverpool. We’ve never really shown what we’re capable of in this competition, but we’ve got a squad which is strong enough to compete for every single trophy and we want to get our hands on the lot this year.’
