Chelsea Ladies win Spring Series

05/06/2017

Chelsea Ladies won the 2017 Spring Series in style by seeing off Birmingham City.

The Blues looked on top from the start, and went ahead after 20 minutes thanks to a Karen Carney penalty.

Fran Kirby was charged down by the onrushing Ann-Katrin Berger, the Birmingham goalkeeper, after being put through on goal by a brilliant lofted Maren Mjelde ball into the box.

The referee immediately pointed to the spot, and Carney stepped up to hammer it straight down the middle, sending Berger the wrong way.

A few minutes later Mjelde, who has been an incredible signing for Emma Hayes's side, saw an opportunity of her own.

The Norwegian international spotted the goalkeeper off her line and tried to chip her from 25 yards out. Berger was just able to backtrack and catch the ball.

Only a smart save prevented the Blues going two ahead just before half-time. Carney found Ji So-Yun in the box with a deep ball, and the Korean immediately nodded it down to Kirby. The striker's shot was hard and low, but Berger got down quick to smother it.

The Birmingham City goalkeeper was at fault for the second goal near the hour mark.

Crystal Dunn, Mjelde and Gemma Davison exchanged passes on the edge of the area, before Davison fired a low cross in.

Berger failed to hold onto the ball, which went through her legs, and the ball bounced off the bottom of the post.

Fran Kirby reacted quickest, jumping onto the loose ball to poke it into an empty net.

Substitute Erin Cuthbert had a chance to make it 3-0 late on, but was forced wide of the Birmingham goal by Berger.

Chelsea finished top of the Spring Series table, level on points with Manchester City but ahead thanks to their amazing goal difference.

The Spring Series is the final Women's Super League season to be played between the Spring and Autumn, with the new format 2017/18 season starting in September.
