Bridget explains...the winter football

Hey BridgeKids,

Are you hoping for snow this year? I am!

I'm hoping for snowmen and sled rides and snow angels... but I always have my fingers crossed for some football in the snow! Especially because it really shows off the high-visibility yellow or orange ball that the Premier League uses from October 28 to March 31!

Chelsea were actually one of the first two teams to use this season's yellow ball, when they beat Burnley 4-0 in October. That was the first game featuring the 2018/19 ball, which is made by Chelsea's kit sponsor Nike.

The Blues have a great history with hi-vis footballs. In 1997, they used an orange ball against Norwegian side Tromso in the 1997-98 Cup Winners’ Cup, winning 3-2 away and 9-4 on aggregate.

The Blues went on to win the Cup, beating Stuttgart 1-0 in the final! Who was the goalscorer? It was Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola, who is now the Blues' assistant manager!

Up until a few years ago, the yellow or orange ball was only used when it snowed. However, it's played with in every Premier League now over the colder months.

This is because it's easier for footballers to see a high-visibility ball during the darker days and in the wintery weather.

I hope you enjoy all the winter football this year!
