Bridget Explains: UEFA Nations League!

Heya BridgeKids!

You might have noticed recently that Chelsea haven’t been playing as much as usual. That’s because there’s an international break, where many club players are taking part in the UEFA Nations League!

But what actually is this tournament?

The UEFA Nations League is a brand-new knock-out tournament for international teams! The UEFA organisation put the tournament together in the hope of making international friendlies more exciting!

The tournament began with 55 teams, who were split between four groups depending on where they stand in the official UEFA rankings. They then battled it out, with the winner of each group reaching the final, and the teams coming in bottom being relegated!

There’s only four teams left in the tournament now; Holland, Portugal, Switzerland and England! There were some big shocks in the group stages, especially when the Netherlands came back from being two-nil down to draw with Germany in the last five minutes!

Loads of Chelsea players have been involved in the tournament, and some will likely feature in the final! Most excitingly, Ross Barkley, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mason Mount who all helped England reach the final!

Now we’ve got our finalists, we’ll have to wait until June 2019 for the finals in Portugal. The winners will receive a whopping €7.5 million, with the runners-up getting €6.5. The winners also get an impressive trophy!

So we’ve got a while to wait until then. In the meantime, we’ve got lots more club football to watch, starting with Chelsea battling against Spurs this weekend!
