Friday Facts: The Women's Euros


UEFA Women's EURO 2017 kicks off on Sunday, with eight Chelsea Ladies stars involved!

But how did the tournament start and who has won it before?

Bridget here, and it's time I filled you in on my five favourite facts about the competition so you're ready for kick off!

1. The UEFA European Women's Championship were set up in 1984, but were called the European Competition for Women's Football for the first three years it was held: 1984, 1987 and 1989.

2. Germany have won seven of the last eight UEFA European Women's Championships!

3. Chelsea Ladies and Norway star Maren Mjelde (pictured above) played in the last final in 2013.

4. Three current Chelsea Ladies players played in the 2009 final for England against Germany: Katie Chapman, Karen Carney and Eni Aluko!

5. The eight Chelsea players at the championships this year are: Karen Carney, Millie Bright, Carly Telford, Fran Kirby, Ramona Bachmann, Erin Cuthbert, Hedvig Lindahl and Maren Mjelde!

The first match will see hosts the Netherlands take on Maren Mjelde's Norway! Keep an eye on BridgeKids for all the news!
