Chelsea Ladies hammer Sunderland

Chelsea Ladies put a magnificent seven past Sunderland in the Women's Super League over the weekend, bouncing back to winning ways after the draw against Arsenal.

The Blues were 5-0 ahead before half-time, in a game where they could have hit double figures!

Erin Cuthbert and Fran Kirby both scored two while Karen Carney, Maren Mjelde and Ramoan Bachmann were also on the scoresheet.

The Blues had an early opportunity to go ahead when Eni Aluko was brought down in the box. Gemma Davison took the penalty, but saw her shot saved by the Sunderland goalkeeper.

It didn't take long for the Blues to take the advantage, however.

Mjelde turned on the pace to power past the Sunderland defence, before finding Cuthbert in space. The Scot made no mistake, slotting the ball into the net.

Carney scored goal number two after the half-hour, fed by a chipped ball from Ji So-yun.

Ji set up Mjelde for Chelsea's third, after some great play by Carney, who was also involved in the fourth goal of the day, scored by Bachmann.

Carney set up another just before half-time, feeing Cuthbert who got her second goal of the game.

Fran Kirby came on at half-time, as did Crystal Dunn, showing how strong Chelsea's squad is this season.

Kirby scored her two goals in the space of five minutes, the first a calm finish after rounding the 'keeper, the second a low drive into the corner.

The Blues are currently second, four points behind Liverpool, who have played two more games. Next up, it's a trip to third-placed Manchester City, before the Blues face current leaders Liverpool at home.

Two wins would put Chelsea Ladies in a commanding position.
