Ray Wilkins 1956-2018

04/04/2018

We’re very sad to learn that Chelsea legend Ray Wilkins has passed away at the age of 61.

During his time at Chelsea, Ray established himself as a Stamford Bridge hero. He was an amazing player, captain and assistant coach, and incredibly well loved by everyone at the club, from the fans to the staff.

Ray joined the club in the second half of the 1970s, and quickly become one of the brightest players in the squad. He was a natural leader, and famously became Chelsea’s youngest ever permanent captain.

During his role as captain, he lead a Blues team to promotion when the odds were completely stacked against us. We couldn’t have done it with him.

As well as being a Chelsea hero, he was also a legendary England international, having amassed 84 caps for his country.

After his playing days, Ray stayed in the world of football both as a coach and as a pundit.

As a coach, Ray first joined Gianluca Vialli’s coaching staff, where his experience was priceless, and lead to the Blues winning the FA Cup.

He continued as a trusted coach for many years, most notably when he worked with Carlo Ancelotti and helped the team make history by winning the Premier League and FA Cup double.

Many football fans will also recognise Ray from co-commentary and punditry. His insight and knowledge made him one of the most loved and respected voices in the game.

Ray was frequently referred to as one of the nicest guys in football, and his loss marks a very sad day for the beautiful game. We send our love to his friends and family.
