Antonio Rudiger joins Chelsea

Antonio Rudiger has joined Chelsea on a five-year contract.

The central defender spent the last two seasons with Roma, after playing for Stuttgart where he broke into the Germany team.

The 24 year-old has won 17 caps for his country and recently helped Germany to a FIFA Confederations Cup win, playing in the 1-0 final win over Chile.

‘It’s a great feeling because not every player has the opportunity to join a huge club like this,' he said after signing. 'I am looking forward to meeting up with my new team-mates and I’m very proud to officially become a Chelsea player.’

Rudiger is a tall, fast, versatile defender, capable of playing at centre-back or full-back. Strong in the air and in a tackle, Rudiger will add power to Chelsea's defence.

'I just want to help the team become even stronger,' Rudiger told Chelseafc.com in an interview. 'I hope to learn a lot from Antonio Conte, who is a great coach, and so many talented team-mates. Obviously it would also be great if I could lift a trophy at the end of the season.'

The centre-back will wear the No.2 shirt and provide competition for Gary Cahill, Cesar Azpilicueta and Kurt Zouma.
