Stat Attack: First day of the season

As Chelsea prepare for their first match of the Premier League season, a home match on Saturday against Burnley, let's look back at how they've done in previous campaign openers!

Did you know? The Blues have won seven and drawn two of their last 10 season openers!

The biggest of those wins was a 6-0 thrashing of West Brom at the start of the 2010-11 season. Didier Drogba scored a hat-trick in that match, while Florent Malouda got a brace. Frank Lampard finished off the scoring.

Chelsea's biggest ever win at the start of the league was actually in their second ever season.

Did you know? Chelsea thrashed Glossop North End 9-2 at the start of the 1906-07 season.

The Blues gained promotion that season to League Division One, just one season after they became a professional club!

That was their first season in the top league in England, but the Blues struggled to cement their place there until 1988-89, when they were promoted from the Second Division as champions!

Did you know? Chelsea became champions of England for the first time in 1954-55, but they actually started the season with a 1-1 draw against Leicester City.

Apart from that first division win, however, the Blues have started all their title-winning campaigns with a victory on the first day of the season.

A win on Saturday against Burnley, then, would be a brilliant way to kick of the 2017-18 Premier League!
