Stat Attack: The World Cup!

With the World Cup just around the corner, it’s a great time to run through some of our favourite stats about football’s most exciting international tournament!

- 3.2 billion people watched the 2014 World Cup, that’s almost half of the world’s population!

 - Brazil are the most successful nation in the World Cup. They’ve won the competition five times! Italy and Germany come in second, having both won it four times.

 - Mexico have lost of the most ever World Cup games, losing a total of 25 matches!

 - The most goals ever scored in one World Cup game is five, scored by Russian legend Oleg Salenko.

 - The fastest ever goal in a World Cup match came from former Turkish player Hakan Sukur in 2002. It took him just 11 seconds to score against South Korea!

 - The highest number of goals scored in one match is 12! This was between Austria and Switzerland in 1954, when Austria won 7-5!
