Chelsea draw with West Ham

09/04/2018

Chelsea were held to a draw at the Bridge on Sunday after Azpilicueta’s goal was cancelled out by a Hernandez strike.

The Chelsea team looked strong, with Thibaut Courtois making a comeback, along with captain Gary Cahill. Pedro also returned, meaning Andreas Christensen was dropped to the bench.

It was an emotional day at the Bridge, with tributes being paid to Chelsea hero Ray Wilkins, who sadly passed away earlier in the week. All four corners of the Bridge sang ‘There’s only one Ray Wilkins.’

In the eighth minute, the whole crowd stood and applauded Ray, who wore the number eight for the majority of his career. It was a stunning tribute.

By this point in the game, the action was well underway. Eden Hazard already had a shot go just wide after a great run, which lead to West Ham forward Marko Arnautovic coming close to goal, only for Cahill to brilliantly get in his way.

The Blues continued to attack brilliantly in the first half, with Willian coming so close to scoring! First time passes from Fabregas, Hazard and Morata teed up the skilful Brazilian, but Joe Hart stuck his foot out at the right time to block the shot.

There wasn’t much that Joe Hart could do with the next shot though! Victor Moses crossed the ball deep into the box, where Morata managed to climb above two defenders to head the ball across goal, where Azpilicueta was waiting to poke it into the back of the net.

After going a goal up, the confidence was flowing. It only took Willian 90 seconds to have another run on goal, after Hazard slickly back-heeled the ball into his path. It wasn’t meant to be however, and neither was Morata’s goal, which was unfortunately ruled offside. So close!

Midway through the second half, West Ham striker Chicharito came on as a substitute and changed the game completely. A long ball was sent into Arnautovic, who then passed the ball back to the Mexican striker, who confidently striked the ball past Courtois to make it 1-1.

After this, it was difficult to get back into the game. Hazard had two attempts on goal, but both times had his shots blocked by the West Ham keeper.

Giroud also attempted one of his trademark headers, but it wasn’t meant to be. The match finished 1-1.
